Cause There Ain’t No Cure for the Summer Time Blues! Part 2
In February, we published an article on things your student could do to prepare for their summer break. We know that may have been a little early for thinking about summer, but many of the internships and summer job opportunities start the process early and if you don’t get your applications in by April you may miss out. With that said there are still opportunities to intern and possibly work over the summer but that means your student needs to apply sooner rather than later! The time off is still a great chance to work on some of the projects that will help them be successful long term. Below are some reminders of things your student can do to be proactive about their future! Remember, these are not just important for the summer but for life after graduation!
1. Create or build a resume.
2. Develop your LinkedIn profile – www.linkedin.com
3. Shadow a professional for a day is another strategic activity your student may want to undertake while on summer break. The only thing better than asking someone what they do, is to actually see them do it. This may be somewhat difficult based on the professional’s time; however, it does not hurt to ask. If your student has an opportunity to get behind the scenes of a business and to experience the culture of the organization, it may have a greater impact on their career choices. Also, these professionals are people your student can add to their network.
4. Establish your brand. Ask yourself the following questions:
a. What are the last 3 compliments you have received?
b. What is the common element between the three?
c. Find your edge: What are ways you solve problems, bring happiness, stir excitement?
d. Come up with one word that describes you as a complete person.
e. Create a “Why You?” statement. What makes you the absolute best person for the position?
f. Write down a story about yourself that you are proud of.
g. Who have you inspired throughout your life? Where did you dig your heels in and move out of your comfort zone?
h. Describe your primary benefit? What is the benefit to your brand?
5. Goal: To become irresistible!
Remember, it is not too late for your students to find that internship or summer job, but they need to get going now! If they have chosen to take the summer off then make sure they spend at least part of the time working on these projects. They will prove vital as they head further into their college career and beyond.

SUMMER IS HERE!
Students taking classes this summer and those who are working and living on campus over the summer will be sent and emailed a bill on May 6th. Because our summer timeline is condensed, payment is due on May 17th. If your student is interested in using Parent PLUS or Private loans to pay for summer expenses they should apply for these loans as soon as possible. Those planning to use Parent PLUS loans or unused Direct Subsidized or Unsubsidized student loans (that were not used in fall 2012 or spring 2013) must be enrolled in at least 6 units in order to be eligible.
IT’S NOT TOO EARLY TO START THINKING ABOUT FALL!
Fall bills will arrive in your mailbox in early July but if you want to get a jump start on fall payments, you can sign up for our 5-pay Tuition Installment Plan (TIP) through your student or parent portal (my.pointloma.edu) starting mid-May. The first fall payment will be due June 5th. If you don’t enroll until July you will be able to take advantage of our 4-pay plan starting July 5th.
FALL FINANCIAL AID
Fall Financial Aid Award letters will be sent to continuing students via email in the next two weeks for students who plan to return in the fall. Keep an eye on your PLNU email over the summer to make sure that you receive all communications from Student Financial Services
If you plan on taking out a credit-based loan, such as a Parent PLUS or private loan, please wait to apply until after June 15th. If you apply before this date, your credit may expire by the time the loan is funded.
If you have any questions regarding your student’s statement of account, please feel free to contact the Student Financial Services Office at (619)849-2538 or by email at sfs@pointloma.edu. Our summer hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30AM- 4:30PM. We are here to serve you!
Send a Celebration Treat!
Point Loma Nazarene University Women’s Auxiliary
Would you like to send your student some homemade desserts? For a $25 donation, the Women’s Auxiliary of PLNU will lovingly bake homemade cakes, cookies, or brownies and have them delivered right to your student’s residence hall!
You can order and pay online at www.pointloma.edu/cake.
Proceeds from this fundraiser are going toward Women’s Auxiliary’s fundraising efforts to fulfill the wish lists of each residence hall. They will be working on projects like putting in bike racks, kitchen upgrades, purchasing printers, adding dehumidifiers, and so much more. So, it is a double benefit for your student!
Please note: Two weeks advanced notice is appreciated.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call Mary De Luca at 858-461-1640.
